Investigación

My research areas include bryophyte systematics, long-distance dispersal mediated by wind, conservation prioritization and species distribution modelling, mostly using more than one of the previous to answer questions on how organisms diversify, disperse to new areas, and eventually get established. I have interest in applying species distribution models to practical questions regarding systematic conservation planning, and applying those results in the real life, which implies working with communities; For some years I was the responsible of the MSc program “Biodiversity in tropical areas, and its conservation” in Ecuador.

I am also interested in assessing if environmental changes drive evolutionary changes in bryophytes, considered for some to be slow evolving organisms. Finally, I am involved in a study to improve climatic comfort in buildings using nature-based solutions

“Speciation and hybridization in bryophytes: genome, epigenome and biogeography in the model genus Ceratodon”

Co-IP: Rosa M. Ros (U. Murcia) & J. Muñoz – Funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation – Climate change is expected to accelerate evolutionary changes in bryophytes. The study of these changes can be done assessing genetic differences between populations of a widely distributed species growing under different environmental conditions, or comparing two very close species preferring different environmental conditions. We use the last strategy with Ceratodon as study subject. Ceratodon purpureus is a cosmopolitan and very common in central and northern Spain, but very rare to the south, where it is replaced by C. amazonum, which occupies a different niche and it is only known from southern Spain, where it is abundant. This project will delve into the role of epigenetic modifications in evolutionary processes, such as ecological speciation. The general objective is to achieve a better understanding of evolutionary genetics and ecology in bryophytes using data from genome and epigenome, from the environmental niche, and from the interactions between these compartments as biotic and abiotic drivers of biodiversity.

Application of Nature-Based Solutions for local adaptation of educational and social buildings to Climate Change

IP: J. Muñoz – Funded by the LIFE Programme of the European Union – Climate change is now recognized as one of the most serious environmental, social and economic challenges facing the world. Many educational and social service buildings will face multiple challenges in the coming decades related to climate change (heat waves, changes in annual and seasonal precipitation patterns), affecting the health and well-being of children and elderly people who are the main users of these types of centers. The overall objective of the project is to contribute to increasing the resilience of these buildings by implementing Nature-Based Solutions as prototypes of climate adaptation and improved well-being.
