The main motivation behind my research is to understand patterns and drivers of biotic assemblage at long temporal and broad spatial scales, with special emphasis on the role of ancient climate as an agent shaping diversity. To this end, I combine probabilistic approaches, fossils and molecular tools to reconstruct the evolutionary history of organisms at macroevolutionary scales.
I am also interested in the fossil record and its integration with current evidence to provide more realistic scenarios of the past. I am currently leading two research projects to tackle the origin of the extraordinary Neotropical diversity (NEODIV project), and the demise of an ancient tropical biome, the boreotropical forest, in the Northern Hemisphere (BOREOTROP project). In both projects using new biogeographic and diversification tools, and a multi-taxon perspective.
