Video-Microscopy of High Resolution and Fluorescence.  Analysis and Processing Image comprises:

1. A combined and motorized Olympus® BX51 optical microscope for the following techniques:
  • Light transmitted in bright field
  • Phase contrast
  • DIC microscopy (Nomarski)
  • Epifluorescence
2. Image capture system comprising:
  • Leica®DMC4500 high resolution digital camera ( 5 megapixel CCD sensor, live image speed of up to 18 frames per second, 1280 x 960 pixels SXGA resolution)
    • High resolution Retiga® 1300C digital camera (cooled, monochrome, 1.3 million pixels) suitable for videomicroscopy.
    • Computer
    • Programs for image capture, processing and analysis, and video generation (Syncroscopy-Automontage®, Imax-Solex®)

    Definition of equipment and system
    Designed exclusively for the capture, study and analysis of high resolution images and videos of ultrastructural features using brightfield, phase contrast, DIC and fluorescence microscopy techniques.

    This equipment may only be used for the purpose defined above and by persons trained in these techniques and the use of this kind of equipment. It is not to be used for techniques for which other equipment is available at the centre.

    Please remember that these rules have been prepared to make the use of this equipment flexible and rapid; therefore, failing to abide by them will limit the use of the equipment listed here.

    A number of hours available each week will be provided so time can be booked. To book these facilities, heads of research groups or principal investigators in charge of projects should contact the head of the UTAI, who will provide the forms necessary.  In all cases it will be necessary to notify the head of the UTAI explaining why it is necessary to use the facilities. The researcher must also agree to the rules for use and responsibilities.

    A register will be kept of the time the activity started and finished. This will be signed by the user. There will also be an incidents section in case any anomalies are seen in the functioning or state of the equipment. In the event of an incident the head of the UTAI must also be notified.

    Hourly charges are set to cover the cost of maintenance of the equipment, systems and microscope room. 

    If fluorescence-based techniques are used, the cost of using the mercury vapour lamp will be added to the general charges. It is therefore necessary that users note the length of time they have been using it in the register.

    Each project's principal investigator is responsible for the use of the equipment. He or she must ensure that: 

    • He or she knows how to use the equipment and that it is suitable for the study and that he or she can demonstrate this to the head of the research support unit (UTAI).
    • The researcher is trained in the use of the equipment and on internal rules governing its use.
    • He or she reserves the required time in the folder set aside for this purpose.
    • He or she takes responsibility for the people working for him or her.
