Programa Synthesys

Conferencia: “Morphological and Molecular identification of selected gasteromycetes. A comparison of Pyrenean and Balkan Peninsula populations"

The main aims of this Synthesys project were molecular analyses of selected “Gasteromycetes” genera mainly from MacCedonian Collection of Fungi (MCF). In some genera (Battarrea, Lycoperdon, Scleroderma, Tulostoma), the main problem was the identification to the specific range, since not morphological characters are well delimited. There is a strong need for molecular characterization of fungi in the area. So far, analyses of DNA on fungal material from Macedonia and surrounding areas were not performed since there were no facilities available at the Institute of Biology. Participation of this short but efficient course I have opportunity to learn the necessary approaches for phylogenetic work in mycology. During this stay about 200 extractions and PCRs of more than 20 different species were done. More than 20 samples were analyzed and photographed on SEM. These results will not only contribute to additional scientific information for proposed genera, but also will initiate the molecular approaches in mycology for the (scientific and education) area of Macedonia.
